Announcements Junior Class "College Search" WorkshopThe counselors will be presenting a few workshops for juniors who want to start the college search process. Stop by the Career Center by Friday, 5/18 to sign up for this informative workshop. The Cal State application, UC application, the Common App (private college), and other helpful websites will be explored.

GATE Night was our first event planned for parents and students. 8th grade through seniors attended the dinner and recognition event. Valedictorians, Salutatorian, Boys and Girls State representatives, and the American Mathematic Competition top scorers were recognized for their achievements.
Guest speakers included District GATE Director Mr. Hampton, Virtual School Teacher Mrs. Hancock, and Cal Poly Talent Search Advisor Ms. Chavez. Superintended Joseph and School Board member Mr. Naa were also present to meet with students and parents. Handouts to help our students find the right summer programs, the right colleges, and scholarship opportunitites were available. Dinner was provided by our own terrific Foods program! ![]() College Awareness WeekCollege Awareness Week is going strong! UC Berkeley, Cal State San Bernardino, USC are a few of the colleges who have had representatives visiting in our classrooms this week. Daily trivia question winners include Cathering Truong and Matt Bonilla. On Tuesday, a speaker from Princeton Review presented important college information and advice to our juniors. Thursday night, a presenter will meet with junior students and parents to discuss "The Path to College." Finally, on Friday we will celebrate our teachers and their alma maters. All students and staff are encouraged to wear College attire. A door decorating contest will also take place.
Engineering ProgramCal State L.A. is offering the opportunity to attend engineering classes for selected high school students. Please see your counselor or Ms. Prescott in the Career Center for information and an application.
Summer School OpportunitiesSeniors: If you failed a course, see your counselor to sign up for summer school to help you earn your diploma.
Juniors: You may take a summer school course if you received a grade of "F" in a course. If you have a GPA below 2.0, you may make up "D" grades as well. Summer School will be offered at Don Lugo High School. All: If you want to take a class but don't meet the above pre-requisites, you may be interested in "Virtual Summer School" courses. Each course is $175.00. See your counselor for information. All: The Mt. SAC High School Referral Program is now accepting applications for summer school. These courses require attendance four days a week at Mt. SAC. See your counselor for an application and information. Course Requests for Next YearParents and Students: Counselors are meeting with all students to plan next year's schedules. Parents should be reviewing the courses that the student is selecting and should sign the yellow copy of the form. Students need to return the signed, yellow copy to the Counseling Office immediately.
Freshmen: Week of 2/20 Sophomores: Week of 3/19 Juniors: Week of 4/16 If you want to review credits for graduation and/or review course selection for college admission, you are encouraged to make an appointment with your counselor. We are here to help with these important decisions! Freshman Guidance LessonCounselors have met with all freshnmen on 2/22 and 2/23 to review CSF (honor roll) and to complete registration for sophomore year. Parents: be on the lookout for the registration form after 2/22. Your approval for course selection is required! Counselors also emphasized good grades and reviewed college admission information and high school graduation requirements.
Counselors and Counselors-in-training met with all freshmen students on Tuesday - Thursday, 10/25-10/27. A presentation regarding "Tips for High School Success and College/Career Preparation" was provided through the Freshmen Transition Class. ![]() American Mathematics CompetitionCongratulations to the 50 students who participated in the 2/22 math competition. Students were treated to snacks provided by our parent organization - CHAPPS! The test was challenging but we are confident our students did great. Students who score very high will have the opportunity to participate in further math competitions...leading to the Math Olympics. Top Chino High performers: AMC 12: Doris Xu, AMC 10: Amanda Te!
All participants were invited to a lunch on Friday, March 30th. PSAT/PLAN ResultsParents and students: If you took the practice SAT or practice ACT last October, meetings were held to review your results. If you missed your review meeting, please make an appointment with your counselor. It is very important to review your practice results to help you do better when you take the real SAT or ACT this spring.

UCD offers summer research opportunities in the biological and natural sciences for 40 high achieving students currently enrolled as sophomores or juniors throughout the state. Successful applicants will reside in university dormintories from June 24 to August 4, 2012. For information and an application go to the program website at http://ysp.ucdavis.edu. Please note: substantial fee reductions (up to 90% of cost) are available for students on a needs-based sliding scale. Pomona College Academy for Youth Success Freshmen: if you excel in math/science and would like to participate in a FREE summer program at Pomona College, please go to http://pomona.edu/pomona-college-academy-for-youth-success/applying for information and an application. Selected students live on the beautiful campus during summer, work with professors, experience excursions and get college application help. Deadline to apply: February 27th. Harvey Mudd College 4th Annual Spring "FAST" Program (Future Achievers in Science and Technology) April 2, 2012 (8-3 p.m.) This is an opportunity for high achieving high school juniors to experience HMC. Participants will sit in on an actual class, take a campus tour, complete a hands-on workshop, and interact with current students, professors. The program is FREE, including meals. For an application: http://www.hmc.edu/fastprogram Junior GATE Guidance LessonOur GATE juniors need to be aware of specialized honor programs that are available to them as they begin the college search process. A presentation for junior GATE students will highlight the steps needed to find the right college. The lesson will be presented in February.
Freshmen/Sophomore GATE Guidance LessonOur GATE students need to be aware of exciting educational opportunities designed for high achieving students. During January, freshmen GATE students will be presented information about summer courses at universities that can enrich their education and help them in the college admissions process. Other college preparation programs will be highlighted. These include AVID, Bright Prospect Scholar, and the Pomona Youth Success programs. Current sophomores will receive this information during February.
